‘I Can’ Statements at Checkendon School

At Checkendon, we want every child to recognise and celebrate their learning journey. Our ‘I can’ statements are simple, child-friendly milestones that clearly show what pupils are learning and what they can achieve in each subject.

These statements:

  • Break down learning into manageable steps, helping children understand their progress.

  • Encourage independence, confidence, and pride in their achievements.

  • Support teachers in planning lessons and tracking progress, ensuring that all pupils meet the learning intentions for their year group.

  • Give parents a clear picture of what their child can do, and how they are developing skills across the curriculum.

By using ‘I can’ statements, we aim to make learning visible, motivating, and meaningful for every child, helping them to take ownership of their growth.
