Curriculum coverage
At Checkendon, our curriculum is carefully designed to help every child make steady, meaningful progress in their learning, from their very first days in Reception through to Year 6.
Learning progression means that knowledge and skills are built step by step, with each year’s learning connecting to what has come before and preparing pupils for what comes next. This ensures that learning is not just remembered for a test, but truly understood and applied in new contexts.
We use Sonar Small Steps of Progress to track how pupils are developing in each subject. These small, carefully sequenced steps help teachers to:
-
Identify what each child already knows and what they need to learn next.
-
Adapt teaching so that every pupil can achieve their best.
-
Ensure consistency and progression across all classes and subjects.
Our approach encourages children to see themselves as growing learners - building confidence, independence, and resilience as they move through the school.
Learning progression at Checkendon is underpinned by our Christian vision: “To unlock the unique voice within each child, fostering a lifelong aspiration of learning excellence within a caring Christian community.” This means every child is supported to flourish academically, spiritually, and personally - developing both the knowledge and character needed to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond.
Curriculum development
We are currently reviewing and refining our curriculum coverage documents to make them even stronger. Our aim is to include key vocabulary for each project or term and identify the “sticky facts” - the essential knowledge we want children to remember and build on as they move through the school.
This is a thoughtful and detailed process, and we are taking the time to ensure each subject reflects the high standards and values of our school. Updates will be added to this page as each subject area is completed. We appreciate your patience as we develop a curriculum that truly supports every child to flourish - academically, spiritually, and personally.
