Our School

Welcome to Checkendon Church of England (A) Primary School

We are thrilled to welcome your family to our school community, where our dedicated staff, governors, and parents work together to create a nurturing, family-like atmosphere. Our small school is a safe and caring place where children can build confidence and actively participate in community life.

Our recent SIAMS review in May 2024 highlighted the exceptional qualities of our school. Our vision, "unlocking the unique voice within each child," is integral to our daily activities. Our Christian ethos sets high expectations for both learning and personal growth, encouraging pupils to excel in sports, music, art, and drama.

We offer memorable learning experiences through a rich curriculum that celebrates each child's strengths. By adopting the 'Growth Mindset' of "not yet," we promote a positive learning environment that fosters lifelong learning. Our rural setting provides valuable outdoor learning opportunities that build resilience, courage, and environmental appreciation.

Collective worship, enriched by our partnership with the neighbouring parish church, is central to school life. Pupils plan and lead worship, aiding their spiritual growth and allowing school leaders to reflect on their practices. As one pupil noted, "The stories of Jesus and the morals behind them are still relevant to today’s life."

Inclusivity and support are at the heart of our community. Older pupils mentor younger ones, and our staff offers personalised support to ensure every child thrives. Parents describe our school as a “beautifully inclusive” space, celebrated for its strong sense of belonging. Our curriculum promotes equality and diversity, inspiring pupils to engage with local and national issues.

We are proud of our school’s achievements, including consistently excellent Key Stage 2 results that place us among the top local schools. Our dedicated staff, small class sizes, strong values, and gold-level sports activities—recognised by our Gold Sports Mark in July 2024—underscore our commitment to excellence.

Our weekly Forest School sessions allow children to connect with nature, whether listening to birdsong, watching bluebells grow, or building dens. We cherish our local environment, frequently visiting and inviting guests to enhance our learning experiences.
