Intent: why we teach computing

Our vision to unlock the unique voice within each child, fostering a lifelong aspiration of learning excellence, lies at the heart of the Checkendon Church of England (A) Primary School computing curriculum. Through structured lessons using the Purple Mash Computing Scheme of Work, and access to high-quality technology resources, we aim to develop pupils’ digital literacy, coding skills, and computational thinking within a caring community.

Rooted in our values of respect, integrity, compassion, courage, and hope, we aim for every pupil to develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding to navigate and create confidently in a digital world.

Our computing curriculum is designed to:

• Develop digital literacy, programming, and online safety skills.
• Encourage problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking through engaging and purposeful projects.
• Foster understanding of hardware, software, algorithms, and data handling.
• Ensure all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds, achieve success in line with their peers.

Implementation: how we teach computing

• We follow the Purple Mash Computing Scheme of Work, ensuring a progressive and structured approach from Reception to Year 6.
• Pupils are taught computing regularly through lessons that include coding, algorithms, digital literacy, data handling, and online safety.
• Lessons use practical, hands-on activities, with clear progression to build confidence, problem-solving, and technical skills.
• Pupils have access to high-quality resources and equipment thanks to PTA funding for 10 iPads and 20 Chromebooks, ensuring each child can engage fully during lessons.
• Teachers model skills using the  I do, we do, you do approach, gradually releasing responsibility to pupils.
• Activities are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring access and challenge for every pupil.
• Assessment is carried out through Sonar Small Steps, tracking pupils’ skills and knowledge termly to ensure progress and identify next steps.

Academic impact

• Pupils develop practical digital skills and computational thinking.

• By the time they leave Checkendon, pupils are confident, creative, and responsible digital citizens, equipped with the skills, knowledge, and character to flourish.

Evaluation and continuous improvement

• Progress and attainment are monitored termly using Sonar Small Steps, alongside work scrutiny and pupil feedback, to inform planning and next steps.
• Governors and subject leaders monitor impact to ensure alignment with the school’s Christian vision and Ofsted priorities: curriculum quality, personal development, inclusion, and engagement.
