Forest School at Checkendon Primary

Nestled in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside, our school is perfectly placed for children to explore and connect with the natural world. Yet, many children initially have little understanding of their surroundings. Forest School experiences help them build resilience, confidence, and independence—skills that benefit them both now and in the future.

According to the Forest School Association, the process goes far beyond knowledge-gathering. It supports learners socially, emotionally, physically, intellectually, and even spiritually. In a safe, non-judgemental, and nurturing environment, children are encouraged to try new things, take thoughtful risks, and develop a deeper sense of self.

Forest School fosters a meaningful connection with the world while helping children understand their place within it. Our approach to risk is holistic: it’s not just about physical challenges, but also about overcoming emotional and social hurdles. By tackling these real-world challenges, children build self-belief, problem-solving skills, and resilience. In this way, Forest School nurtures healthy, creative, and independent learners.

What children learn

  • Practical and creative skills: Using tools to make sculptures and complete tasks, children develop confidence and self-esteem.

  • Progressive challenges: Small, achievable tasks gradually increase in complexity, encouraging success and growth.

  • Teamwork and empathy: Working in pairs or groups helps children understand and consider others’ feelings while achieving shared goals.

  • Connection with nature: Time outdoors allows children to relax, reflect, and build a deeper relationship with the environment.

  • Personal development: Forest School helps children grow into resilient, creative, and independent individuals who thrive both in school and beyond.
